What is ManipurTalks?

A free online community to discuss anything and everything related to Manipur... including, but not limited to  social issues, education, economy, film, music, arts, food, television, gender, sexuality and cultural identity.
Why another website on Manipur?

Yes, there are numerous websites about Manipur - E-pao, Kanglaonline, Imphal Free Press, Huiyen Lanpao, Poknapham, etc to name a few. But all these sites are more into one-to-many communication. They focus on 'publishing' news, opinions, articles, et al. While they are doing a brilliant job at it, making news and information accessible to netizens all around the world.
We felt something was missing - a place to have meaningful, principled conversations, discuss/debate, share stories and interact.
And ManipurTalks is an attempt to fill the gap.
A place to ask questions about anything to do with Manipur, and hopefully get some answer.
Questions ranging from 'I need to file an RTI application, know anyone who can help?'  to a 'Has anybody gone to Dzuko valley? Me and a friend are planning to go there. Can you help us plan?'.
How is it different from Orkut communities, Facebook Groups?

Most of the activities on Orkut are now limited to pointless games/quizes. We won't let these activities hijack useful discussions in our forums.
Thankfully Facebook hasn't reach that stage yet. A lot of meaningful discussions do happen there, and we also take part in some of them. But, most of these discussions happen across many groups. They get drowned among the status updates, application updates from games, quizes and are difficult to go back to. ManipurTalks focus on discussions, and only discussions.
Contents on Orkut/Facebook are protected, our's isn't. It is open to all, even to search engines.
We are not trying to replace FB/Orkut, but to present a new platform where we can have 'principled' discussion devoid of games, insult or attack against members, hate speeches, etc.
Also, a lot of well informed, educated people aren't present on these communities/groups/social network.. and we are trying to get those few to speak up, share their opinions, educate us.
